Cuddoozle vs. Boppy: Which is the Best Nursing Pillow?

Many lactation consultants and doctors recommend the use of nursing pillows to reduce strain on your arms, shoulders and neck while feeding baby. The Boppy Pillow is probably the best-known nursing pillow on the market, but is it the best?

I purchased the Boppy because I didn't know there were any other nursing pillow options. The Boppy is easily found at big stores like Target, Babies R Us and Walmart, and it is affordable (prices vary but you can generally get a pillow and slipcover for $35 or less). I also liked the fact that the Boppy can be used as an infant support pillow for tummy time, sitting and propping up baby.

Then I heard about the Cuddoozle. This mom-invented nursing pillow is made of patent-pending, three-layered memory foam to comfortably support baby. In addition to its colorful, removable slipcover, the Cuddoozle pillow has a permanent, waterproof inner-cover that acts as barrier against milk and body fluids. The Cuddoozle also comes with an additional multi-purpose pillow, which you can use to elevate baby to breast feeding height (great if you have a long torso) or as a lumbar support for mom.

After examining both the Boppy and the Cuddoozle, I prefer the Cuddoozle because the memory foam offers superior support when compared to a traditional stuffed nursing pillow like the Boppy and because it has a water-resistant liner to prevent spit-up and fluids from soaking through the slipcover onto the pillow. But you will pay more for this superior product. While the Boppy pillow sells for approximately $35, the Cuddoozle's suggested retail price is $56-65.

Cuddoozle Nursing & Bottle Feeding Pillow

If you are a breastfeeding mom, chances are you need a nursing pillow. They raise a baby up and give mom a chance to concentrate on proper baby latch position rather than full-body support. There are many pillows on the market, but only one that is made of memory foam and concentrates on hygiene. The Cuddoozle, formally CozyCushy, is a memory foam infant feeding pillow that makes nursing easier and more comfortable.

Unlike other nursing pillows, the Cuddoozle has a large, flat surface that provides more room for baby and sides that wrap around enough to provide good support for mom's arms and elbows while feeding. The sides are also big enough to feed your baby in the popular "football hold" position, in which the baby lays on the side of mom to nurse. It has a large interior cutout that we found fit mom's waistline comfortably. Note: The pillow doesn't bend easily, so if you are a plus size mommy it might not fit.

The pillow is made of memory foam (which is naturally hypoallergenic) that helps cradle the baby's body, relieve pressure points and improve circulation. Our favorite part is that for cleanliness the memory foam pillow is covered with a "Permanent Sewn-On Inner Cover". This inner cover is a poly-stretch knit fabric with a breathable and cleanable outer film applied to it. The material has a built-in "anti-bacterial" property and is also water-resistant, mold-proof and mildew proof. To us, it looks like the inner pillow is covered in a special plastic-type material. This makes the pillow easy to wipe clean, as well as, providing added defenses against allergens, dust mites, bacteria and mold. Since we have all had mishaps with feeding and watched the spills and even diaper mishaps seep through the covers and into other nursing pillows, this inner pillow makes us feel all warm and fuzzy about our nursing pillows staying clean.

The Cuddoozle has a removable and machine washable cover that comes in 6 different fun, baby-themed patterns such as trains and pink bunnies. There are two side pockets (one on each side) for storing things such as breast pads no matter which side of the pillow is being used. Another great feature of the Cuddoozle is that it has a carry handle on top for easy transport.

An additional smaller pillow (the exact size of the cutout and complete with a handle and zip off cover) is included to use in a couple different ways: to lift up part of the pillow from underneath to adjust the height or use as a back support for mom.

The one drawback to this fabulous pillow is that because it is a memory foam pillow, the entire pillow has a smell to it when you first take it out of the package (all memory foam does). We recommend removing it from the package, washing the cover and letting the pillow air out for a bit before using it to help eliminate the smell.

Even though the Cuddoozle is great for nursing, it can also be used by mom, dad or a caregiver for bottle feeding to provide ergonomic support and a more comfortable feeding experience. With a large flat surface, a fabulous inner cover that keeps it clean, and fun, washable covers, this memory foam nursing pillow that retails for $64.95 could be a great accessory for all nursing moms.

Note: In the manufacturer's product pictures, it appears that the pillow would wrap all the way around mom. This isn't the case. It's a c-shaped pillow and in the picture the additional smaller pillow has been placed on the models right knee under the nursing pillow to lift the Cuddoozle up for proper height.

The first time I fully appreciated the incredible benefits of memory foam was while I was away on a trip to New Mexico.
